crushing doubt

Apr 30, 2021

Today, I am joined by yet another Daniel! This time, you’ll get to meet Daniel Lyman, a licensed clinical social worker, who was introduced to mind body concepts by Alan Gordon. Through this work, Daniel came to see that his frequent migraine headaches were actually caused — and could be controlled — by the mind body process. He now has formed his own mind body pain clinic, The Mind Body Therapy Center, in Portland, Oregon.

Daniel and I connected deeply and quickly on our shared interest and ideas, including the fact that he sees confidence in the diagnosis as key to recovery, mirroring some of my central ideas about doubt. We also compared notes on the idea of power and how the experience of mastering symptoms tends to open people up to themselves in ways that become expansive in their lives.

One of the things I was most fascinated by was our both seeing a connection between the process of coming out — Daniel is well familiar with this, having done so, himself — and being able to talk to people about the mind body experience proudly and openly, without worry about judgment. Daniel’s sense of humor, ease with himself, and wisdom about mind body thinking made him a pleasure to interview, and we plan more time together in the near future, as well as some potential collaborations.
